I operated Spark Art Space in Syracuse, New York  for two years while attending grad school at Syracuse University. The gallery space was largely a resource for the students in the art school, hosting off-campus exhibitions, para-academic events and course-related public gestures, critiques and discussions. Though independent in its funding structure, operating as it did through charging modest space rental fees, Spark Art Space under my direction actively sought and maintained its stability through a close engagement with the university’s operations, with efforts made towards an expanded and formalised relationship that would help to ensure its future as an essential, off-campus student resource that met a different type of public. I also took a curatorial interest in the space becoming a site for cross-disciplinary exchange, producing and hosting events that merged together otherwise isolated departmental divides.

A significant move towards this cross-disciplinary exchange was Physical Experience – a literary reading and video art series I curated with poets Patrick Dundon and John Arpea. Merging the university’s thriving creative writing program with a longstanding experimental media culture on and off campus, Physical Experience presented readings of new works by local writers alongside a curated program of video works in an adjacent room.
