Neven Lochhead<\/span><\/strong> is an artist-filmmaker, curator, and educator originally from Kingston, Ontario. He is of Scottish-Canadian and Istrian descent, with familial ties to Trieste and the rural Italo-Slovenian borderlands. He received his PhD in film studies and curatorial practice, with a focus on organizational design, from Queen\u2019s University in 2024, and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at UBC\u2019s School of Music in 2025, where he conducted practice-based filmmaking research on Indigenous song repatriation. He was Director of Programming at SAW Video Media Art Centre from 2016 \u2013 2019, in Ottawa, where he launched and steered the immersive media art gallery, Knot Project Space, and shaped the programming profile for the centre. He attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2015, and Tacita Dean\u2019s Artists Research Laboratory at Fondazione Antonio Ratti, Como, in 2014, which was co-taught with B\u00e9la Tarr. He received the Dean\u2019s Teaching Fellow award in 2023 at Queen\u2019s University for innovative curriculum design relating to his his original undergraduate production course and open textbook, Sound + Synthesis<\/em>,<\/span> which examines sound-image relations and the creative possibilities of sound design in film. Collaborative moving image works shot, edited, and sound designed by Lochhead are in the collections of SFMOMA and Tate Modern. He is currently Assistant Professor in the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies at Lakehead University (Orillia), where he teaches media production, sound design, and exhibition-making.

Extended Bio<\/span><\/strong>

Doctorate |<\/strong> Lochhead received his PhD in April 2024 from Queen’s University’s Screen Cultures and Curatorial Studies program, for his book-length dissertation and integrated portfolio An Artist’s Almanac to Research, Organization, Education, and Bookings<\/em>. The doctoral project’s External Examiner, Neil Mulholland (Edinburgh College of Art) notes that the Artist’s Almanac<\/em> “identifies and overcomes an impasse in the field of artistic research that has emerged from a monocular fixation with the three bogey men – ‘financialization’, ‘professionalization’ and ‘homogenization’ – at the expense of post-rationalist experimentation.” Divided into four theoretically diverse sections, the Almanac<\/em> blends together methodological analysis with applied experimentation to examine the question of artmaking as a form of knowledge, propose a theory of curatorial practice through the lens of organizational studies, develop an educational philosophy driven by sound as a conceptual contagion, and launch a speculative academic discipline: Booking Studies<\/em>.

Exhibition-Making |<\/strong> Lochhead worked with Agnes Etherington Art Centre on various art and curatorial projects during his PhD, from 2020-2024. This included a solo video exhibition From the vibe out<\/em> (2020), which unfolded across different platforms as a video installation, a four-part radio art program, a live online performance, and a working group called “Fabricating Vibe.” He later developed the discursive group show a guest + a host = a ghost<\/em> (2022) alongside Sunny Kerr, which won Exhibition of the Year at the 2022 GOG Awards, and for which Lochhead designed a layered residency platform called “Paranormal Curation.” In summer 2024, Dr. Malini Guha (Carleton University) commissioned Lochhead through her SSHRC grant \u201cOn Traction: Moving Images and Their Realities,\u201d to develop a research cluster re-examining the long-standing relationships between moving images and reality. This resulted in the interdisciplinary platform Something Happened,<\/a><\/em> which unfolded in Tamworth, Ontario, and culminated in a barn-based exhibition of the same name. This has since developed into a yearly summer residency program in Tamworth called On Location, <\/em>including its most recent 2025 iteration and exhibition Crafting Magic.<\/a><\/em>

Educational Practice |<\/strong> At Queen’s, Lochhead developed an original undergraduate theory and production course, Sound + Synthesis, <\/em>which blended sound studies and audio production with film criticism and reception. The itinerant course, occurring in various locations on campus, in off-site satellite galleries, and in public space, would go on receive the Dean’s Teaching Fellow Award in 2023 in acknowledgement of Lochhead’s \u201cexceptional commitment to teaching\u201d and \u201chigh-impact curriculum design.\u201d At Lakehead University (Orillia), he is developing the film and media production curriculum based around a series of interlinked and modular decks of cards. This involves a monthly high-school program Crossfade<\/a>, <\/em>where his undergraduate curriculum gets remixed for local students.

Organizational Work |<\/strong> Lochhead was the Director of Programming at SAW Video Media Art Centre in Ottawa from 2016 – 2019, where he expanded the organization’s programming capacity and reach. This involved designing and launching a media art presentation venue called Knot Project Space, <\/em>which featured various exhibitions, discussions, performances and events by local and international artists through an inquiry-driven and community-facing curatorial method. Lochhead also built and oversaw a year-long commissioning structure called “Video in the Public Sphere” that engaged a working group of five local commissioned artists, the Ottawa public, and a series of visiting scholars. This platform resulted in the city-wide exhibition Imagining Publics <\/em><\/a>in 2019, which activated five outdoor sites around Ottawa from August – November 2019. More recently, Lochhead has been developing On Location,<\/em> a rural summer artist residency program in Tamworth, Ontario, which operates as a context for organizational experimentation and place-based inquiry. The first volume of this platform, Something Happened <\/em><\/a>(2024) re-narrated the temporalities of artistic retreat through a past-tense positioning of the program. The second volume, Crafting Magic<\/a> <\/em>(2025), build an evolving workshop around a deck of cards, and was co-designed with the writer, artist, and educator Neil Mulholland.

Collaborative Filmmaking |<\/strong> As a filmmaker, Lochhead has worked in close collaborative relationships with various artists and scholars, especially Tanya Lukin Linklater, with whom he made various films from 2017-2025, including The treaty is in the body <\/em>(2017, TATE Modern), An amplification through many minds <\/em>(2019, SFMOMA) not like us; Not like us <\/em>(2022, Oakville Galleries), and Quiver <\/em>(2025, Vancouver Art Gallery). Lochhead also works with the artist, curator and writer Dylan Robinson on various films, research and writing projects since 2021, including Amuksism.
